Two cars came from Japan: Kazushi Kita / Yoshifumi Maruyama Nissan March S/T and Makio Yamanaka / John McArthur Mazda 323GTX. Paul Choiniere / John Buffum in the Audi Quattro S-2 and Carl Merrill / Jon Wickens in the Ford Escort Cosworth RS. Paul Choiniere had his step-father John Buffum as his navigator in the Audi Quattro S-2. New Zealander Todd Bawden / Martin Headland was still locked in the GT battle with Vinnie Frontinan before the start.
Anxious spectators walked in from the finish of SS1, Beacon Hill. Paul Choiniere / John Buffum were first on the road in the Audi Quattro S-2.
